Seán Ó hAo was born in 1861 near Glandore, County Cork. He was a native Irish speaker. The folklore collector Seán Ó Cróinín wrote 1,500 pages of lore from him in the course of nine months from 1939 to 1940. Seán Ó hAo was a fisherman and contributed a vast amount of sea lore and legend to the collector, in addition to an autobiographical account. During Seán Ó hAo's lifetime, Irish as the vernacular language disappeared entirely from the Glandore district. The book is edited by Donncha Ó Cróinín, a brother of Seán Ó Cróinín.
