Pádraig Ó Crualaoi (1861-1949) was from the Irish-speaking district of Baile Bhuirne, County Cork. A poet and storyteller, his artistry was evident from a young age. He taught himself to read and write Irish and published two books of poetry. In 1942, Seán Ó Cróinín was Pádraig's next-door neighbour and was also a collector with the Irish Folklore Commission. The contents of this book include verses, poetry and lore which Seán collected from Pádraig. Of particular interest are descriptions of the life and work of poets in County Cork and in east Kerry from 1700 to 1850. The book is edited by Donncha Ó Cróinín, a brother of Seán Ó Cróinín.
